Bikinis vs Bras: The Mystery

I have been pondering something for awhile and I can never figure out the answer. Why is not socially acceptable for women to walk around in their bras and panties? Isn't wearing a bikini at the beach the same thing? I look at a bikini top and bottom being the equivalent of a bra and panties. I know the bikini top isn't for support but more for concealment and looks. Nobody really judges women's bathing suit attire but if a woman is wearing something revealing on the street she is looked at as slutty.

There is definitely a double standard going on here or something equivalent to that. I'm not sure if I'm using the double standard principle correctly here. Men are always trying to get a woman down to their bras and panties. Wouldn't it be less work just to go to the beach?

If a woman walked down the street in her bra and panties, you would think it was odd. But if she walked down the street in a bikini then it's perfectly acceptable. That just doesn't make sense in my head. Both attires are covering up the same parts.

People are half naked at the beach and it's normal. When a guy has his shirt off anywhere else it just seems kind of douchey and creepy. Society is strange. Am I wrong?

Don't get me wrong, because I'm all for it. BUT...
I PROMISE you a woman walking around town in a bikini would be crucified! Not by me, not by you, but by EVERY other woman who sees her.
Besides, if this was to become acceptable, We'd have permanent bruising on the sides of heads from all the slapping our wives and gf's would be laying on us for looking.

I like your logic though...

This is a very inapropriate comment, but I'll say it anyway, during the big heatwave (which is still going on by the way) in the NY area, I found myself at a community pool on Long Island. Now, the people who go to these pools oftentimes do not have much money. This particular pool is actually a county pool so it's very inexpensive to visit. There are peeps so poor they were actually in sports bras and boxers, we were stunned at some of the get-ups people were sportin' at said pool.

This is exactly the socialogical theorem I have been trying to mathmatically prove for many years! You may have pointed me in the direction I needed to go...to the beach!

And Pat's right, it's hard enough to sneak covert looks at fully clothed hot women let alone acceptably half-naked women.

To look at things from another point of view - I was wondering why they don't make bathing suits more like bras and underwear. Women buy sexy undergarments because they make them feel as such, but bathing suits make the average woman (I'm talking mom woman, not 21 year old hottie woman) feel frumpy. I know this because I bought my first bathing suit in more than 10 years last week. The selections were disappointing to say the least - it went from skimpy thong straight to "swimming outfit with skirt to hide your thunder thighs" with nothing in between. Why can't they make bikini tops WITH underwire so they can be more supportive (not to mention be a lot easier on the neck) and bottoms fit JUST right (for less than a small fortune) so a woman would FEEL like walking around in it all day long?

I don't do the whole bikini thing, I prefer to keep my assets hidden, but you're right about there being a double standard. I'm just glad the majority of people I come across, are usually clothed in less skimpy attire. Wouldn't want hubby to suffer a heart attack!

You are right, PTM. You are ALWAYS right. And you rocked your guest post on my blog. Did you hear all that applause? Seriously, you are one of the funniest and nicest bloggers out there. Now, I'm hoping you'll forget about the chocolate cake I keep promising.
As far as your argument, I have too much to cover up to ever wear a bikini, so I'm gonna divert attention to the male species: teen boys are walking around with their pants sagging such that their boxers are fully exposed. In fact, it's unacceptable for an adolescent boy to pull his pants up. If boys can sag, let a girl wear a bikini. It's only fair.

It would probably look kind of weird for a man to be walking around in a speedo if he wasn't in a swimming related environment.

Bra? Panties? Bikinis? I'm good with all of that.

I wonder about this myself, because if I want to walk around my house in my bra and some shorts with the blinds open, that could be problematic. But if I were running around in a bikini, there would be no issue. It's all kinds of unfair.

at the same time women are allowed to enter banks, schools and official institutions in strapless tops, mini skirts and open toe sandals, while men are usually forbidden to enter the same facilities in shorts, flip flops or sleeveless T-shits.

I know, EH?!!!

The other night, I was getting ready to take out the trash. It was hotter than blazes, and I was wearing a sports bra and yoga pants. I thought...WTF? I am NOT going to throw on a shirt just to take out the trash. So I didn't!!! REBEL, I am!!

(I won't mention that it was nearly 1 a.m. and no one was outside at that hour, anyway.)

Dezmond-- It's not like that in Southern California. I see many men in those places who dress horribly. There must be a higher standard where you are.

Do you remember when that female soccer player, Brandi Chastain, ripped off her jersey in celebration of winning? There was some talk of that not being appropriate for TV, even though she was wearing a sports bra beneath. Absolutely baffling.

Great topic. As a man, I think all men should keep their shirts on but women should be ok with walking around in bras and panties. Because you are right - that's what bikinis essentially are and the beach is the best place to indulge that logic in the flesh. Literally in the flesh.
